The village of Saint-Julien-en-Born, where our house can be found, is situated in Les Landes, one of the five departments of Aquitaine. The area is known for its beautiful sandy beaches, pine-tree woods, lakes, rivers and beautiful towns and villages. All these characteristics make numerous activities possible outside the park. For those who do not mind travelling a bit further, the Pyrenees are highly recommended. The coastThe almost 230 km long coastline of the “Côte d’Argent” is characterized by broad beaches and dunes of sometimes even 5 km wide. In this area you can find the highest dunes of Europe: the Dune du Pilat, near Arcachon, which are about 107 m high and famous all over the world. The beaches are clean and quiet, even in the high season, when the areas with activities are also guarded. The nearest guarded beach, Contis Plage, is about 8 km from the park and can be easily reached by car or bicycle. The breakers dashing against the coast are perfect for surfing, body boarding and surf-riding. Dune du Pilat The interiorThe interior of Les Landes is characterised by extensive pine-tree woods, a slightly hilly landscape and many lakes and rivers. The chain of dunes at the coastline forms a natural boundary for the streams in this area. The countless little lagoons are sometimes linked. Via jagged streams the water clears its way to the ocean. Typical examples are the Hutchet and the Contis. Because of these lakes and streams, the area is very popular among enthusiast of water sports (such as canoeing, kayaking, boat excursions). Fishing is also possible, for trout, salmon, pike and bream. There is for example a big pond near Léon, in the park “Moulin de Galoppe”. The pine tree woods are provided with a vast network of bicycle and walking tracks. These are also very suitable for horse riding. Possibilities for water sports at the Etang d’Aureilhan (near Mimizan): Towns and villagesFrom the park you can quickly visit the most beautiful towns and villages, such as Bordeaux, Lourdes, Dax, Bayonne, Biarritz, St. Jean Pied-de-Porte. Some famous seaside resorts are: Mimizan, Biscarrosse, Vieux-Boucau, Capbreton, Arcachon, St. Jean-de-Luz.
Deep inland there are fortified towns such as Saint Justin and Labastide d'Armagnac, which are worth visiting. For those who prefer staying closer to the park, the typically French character can be tasted in one of those charming villages around Saint Julien-en-Born, like Lit-et-Mixe, Mezos and Parentis-en-Born. Biarritz Arcachon Bordeaux The PyreneesThe Pyrenees can be reached quite easily from the park, and offer lots of possibilities for activities, both in the summer and in the winter. In the summer you can go rafting and in the winter you can go skiing. And of course it is also possible to go for a spin in the car.
